BASIC SPINNING
Class fee: $40
With Victoria based spinner/teacher Brenda Nicolson, learn how to spin on a drop spindle, and try your hand at a wheel.

STRATEGIES FOR KNITTING WITH SELF-PATTERNING YARN
Class fee: $40.
Vancouver-based designer Holli Yeoh.
Intrigued by the wonderful self-patterning, printed sock yarns? This class is for non-sock knitters and sock knitters alike. Learn some tricks for working with this magical yarn. Explore various stitch patterns and combine with solid colours. Discover the joys and limitations of self-patterning yarns to make better choices when selecting yarn for your next project.

1 pm - 4 pm
INTRODUCTION TO SAORI WEAVING Class fee: $40
Terri Bibby from Salt Spring Island says that the freestyle Saori approach to weaving opens doors of creativity. Learn about the philosophy as we explore the Saori way through a hands-on demo on the unique Saori looms. It's a great way to use up yarns of all sorts - anything goes. This workshop is open to all and no weaving experience is necessary.

MAKE MITTENS FROM SELF-PATTERNING YARN Class fee: $40
Vancouver-based designer Holli Yeoh.
Use that lovely self-patterning yarn (doubled up) to make a colourful and warm mitten based on Holli Yeoh's Annie's Mittens pattern. Learn how to use self-patterning sock yarn to get fabulous results and new techniques such as a provisional crochet cast-on, inserting a peasant thumb with waste yarn and working from “live stitches.” Experiment with matched stripes, unmatched stripes and incorporate a coordinating solid colour to add interest and change up the regular patterning of the yarn. Prerequisite: participants should have experience knitting in the round and be comfortable using small needles and fingering weight yarn.

KNIT A BEADED NECKLACE OR BRACELET Class fee: $40

Instructor: Vancouver-based designer Sivia Harding
Throw caution to the winds and knit an exuberant beaded masterpiece! The first part of the class is a bead swap, after which you will have a beautiful bowl full of beads which you will string randomly onto the yarn. The knitting is simple garter stitch with a surprise at the end of every other row. Warning: this technique is highly addictive! Skills required: using fine yarn and small needles, stringing beads onto yarn, casting on, binding off, garter stitch knitting (knit every row), simple increasing and decreasing at start and finish, short row wrapping and turning (for the necklace only). Materials: 2.0 mm bamboo double pointed needles (2), an assortment of beads of all shapes, sizes, and colours.

YARN CRAWL
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., all the local yarn stores are opening their doors, throwing out the welcome mat, and offering refreshments to fibre fans who come to visit. We invite you to get out and meet your local yarn store owners and staff, and have a look around at what they have to offer -- and we particularly want to encourage you to visit the stores you don't normally frequent!

See you there!
