knitted shawls

GIVING HANDS is a non-profit organization that makes and distributes scarves and other handmade items to shelters for abused women; shelters for the homeless, transients, teens in crisis and items for various other groups ie. Chemo patients; community health nurses who go into the homes for home visits and crisis pregnancy centers. The need is great. We welcome new members.

We are located in the southeast corner of beautiful British Columbia.

Many times our items are the first personal gifts ever received by the recipients. The items are intended to provide a bit of comfort at a time when a small act of kindness can mean a great deal. Your help can make a difference to someone you may never know, but who will never forget your kindness. They represent a warm hug from a stranger during this very difficult transitional time.

GIVING HANDS hopes to show each one that there is kindness in the world and although they may feel very alone, there is someone who cares about them. Often this small act is the first step toward building the self-esteem that is essential to their healing process. We hope these scarves will be a symbol and constant reminder of each persons’ strength, conviction and personal transformation.

These items ARE NOT FOR SALE. They are gifts from the heart. Women of all ages and backgrounds donate their time and resources to knit or crochet them. Some of them help to provide us with new yarn to keep our work going … WON’T YOU JOIN US TODAY???

If you would like to make a scarf, here are some suggestions:

-use soft, machine washable yarn ** wool or a wool blend can be used but please include a note stating the amount of wool that is in the item (for those with allergies)
    -pick fun unisex colours
-make them between 4-5 inches wide and 60 inches long
    - a variety of stitches will work
    - use any pattern of your choice
